DIY Candy Apple Treat

This recipe makes a dozen DIY candy apple treats, that’s enough to keep everyone happy!

What you’ll need to make these DIY candy apple treats:

12 lollipop sticks
12 apples, pick small ones for ease of eating and they’ll stay on the stick better!
Half a cup of corn syrup
3 cups of sugar
Half a teaspoon of red food colouring (so they look the part!)
A cup of water

It’s also very useful to have a candy thermometer to hand for making these treats.

How to make the DIY candy apple treats

Wash the apples and use paper kitchen towels make sure they are completely dry. Firmly push a lollipop stick through the centre of each apple and make sure they are sturdy, but not poking out of the top of the apple. Cover a baking tray with greaseproof paper and spray with a little cooking spray. Place the apples on the baking tray, make sure they are not touching each other. You will need to use several trays or prepare them in small batches.

In a large saucepan, mix together the corn syrup, the water and the sugar. Bring the mixture to the boil then cook it until it reaches 300 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don’t have a candy thermometer, it’s the ‘hard crack stage’ you’re looking for. You can google more information about getting it to just the right stage without a thermometer to help you.

Once you’ve got the mixture to the right temperature, take the pan off the heat and stir in the food colouring. Putting a cold liquid into the hot candy mixture can cause it to spit so do be careful at this stage. Check the colour looks how you want it, add more if you need to.

Now dip your apples, one by one, into the mixture, this is easy as you simply hold the stick and spin the apples round to ensure they are thoroughly coated. Let them drip for a moment then place them on the baking tray to cool.

As they cool they will harden. Once they are fully cool, you can eat them and enjoy!
